Donovan proves Roscrea's hero
Cisterican, Roscrea 31 St Mary's 14
Centre Adi Donovan was the hat-trick hero as Cistercian Roscrea became the first school to make it into the Junior Cup quarter-final by overpowering St Mary’s at Donnybrook yesterday.
St Mary’s looked to the razor-sharp Ruairi Shields for points in the first half.
The problem was Roscrea had the bigger, more powerful carriers.
Jay Culliton showed his soccer skills to latch on to a loose ball for the opening try in the eighth minute and Luke Rigney appeared two-out from a ruck close to the line for a bulldozing second in the 29th minute as they led 14-9 at the half.
Roscrea looked in complete control when Donovan skittled defenders for a try and a 10-point gap in the 39th minute.
But St Mary’s had plenty in the tank to earn territory and scrum-half Sean Bourke stepped inside the fringe defence to halve the difference.
Donovan struck for his second and third tries in the 54th and 61st minutes to close it out.
