Cullen seals victory

Steve Gillman

St Gerard's secured a hard-fought victory over their local rivals to book a meeting with Cistercian College in the final.

Within two minutes, Gerard's were up 5-0 after Mark Prendergast scored a try in the right corner. However, it would prove to be no walkover as Pres responded by keeping their opponents on the back foot for the rest of the half.

Paul Moran pounced for a soft try for Pres and scrum-half Conor Byrne converted to make it 7-5 at half-time.

The derby picked up in the second half as both teams fought to get a hold of the game. Gerard's Tommy Whittle kicked a penalty before Hugh Armstrong went over for a Pres try. Byrne converted again to make the score 14-8 to Pres.

However, after Whittle struck his second penalty, Con Cullen notched a try in the right corner to put Gerard's in front 16-14. Whittle then sealed the victory with his third penalty of the game late on.
