Cahill leads Rockwell romp

Bandon Grammar School 0
Rockwell College 31

ROCKWELL College made a statement of intent as they saw off Bandon Grammar School with little fuss in their Munster Schools' Senior Cup play-off at Bandon RFC yesterday afternoon.

Beaten finalists in the competition in the last two years, the Tipperary school -- missing injured Irish Schools star Sean McCarthy -- will take some stopping in the competition again. Yesterday, they had the result in the bag before half-time.

Out-half David Johnston had them ahead in the third minute when a gap opened up for him 10 metres out and he crossed over, with scrum-half Brian Hough converting.

Dominant in the line-out and powerful at scrum time, Rockwell were far superior and their expansive game got further reward when their outstanding No 8 Luke Cahill held off three separate tackles before going over in the corner for a try in the 23rd minute.

The visitors surged away with two more tries before the break, flanker Richard Moran profiting after a scrum was won against the head and centre Harry McNulty touching down after a flowing move.

Despite the tempo in the second half being far lower Rockwell were still on top but the only early incident of note saw yellow cards for the visitors' Sean Horgan and Bandon's Gavin Peevers.

Rockwell did get one more try, though they had to wait until injury-time to do so, replacement Cathal Ryan the scorer.

They now prepare for what should be a cracking tie with St Munchin's in the first round proper.
