Brilliant Butler try proves Sligo's crowning glory
David Butler crowned a superb display with a try from his own 22 to secure the Connacht Schools Senior Cup for Sligo Grammar at the Sportsground yesterday.
The centre put the seal on a great day for the Sligo school as they captured their ninth title, having lost four finals since their last success in 2003.
They pulled away in the second-half of a gripping encounter against a Colaiste Iognaid side aiming for a third straight crown.
Sligo overcame the sin-binning of three players -- Shane Creamer, Aaron Spring and Scott Oates.
Full-back Oates marked his return from the bin with the decisive score, slicing through to the corner as his side came from 11-8 down at the interval.
Out-half Pat Hughes added a penalty to make it 16-11 after 50 minutes, and then wrapped up the victory with a 35-metre drop-goal in stoppage time.
And the crowning moment came when the elusive Butler broke away.
Peter Laffey's try had put Sligo ahead after 11 minutes, before Conor Murphy replied.
Robert Butler kicked two penalties for Colaiste Iognaid, either side of a Hughes effort, to make it 11-8 at the break, but Sligo stepped up a gear after the restart.
