'Bridge show title intent

Newbridge Col 36
Belvedere Col 17

Leinster League winners Newbridge College showed they are serious about completing the double as they steamrolled Belvedere at Lakeland's Park yesterday.

The 'Bridge took full advantage of the downfield wind to rack up four first-half tries from fly-half Mark Sutton, wing Joe Darcy, flanker Cormac Nugent and full-back Chris Healy against a solitary penalty from Belvo centre Sean McCullagh to lead 24-3 at the interval.

It would have taken a miracle for Belvedere to swing it from there and they were kept at bay by Newridge's expert timing in the tackle, with Nugent a torment for turnover ball.

However, Paddy Foley got on the end of a line-out and maul to drive low to the line, and McCullagh converted in the 55th minute.

Immediately, the winners returned fire as captain Hugh O'Donnell powered over. Once again, they had the ammunition to respond to a sweeping try by Belvedere's Michael Hanlon, with a strong fend from Niall Fleming in injury-time.
