Boyle brace seals deal for Gorey
Gorey CS 17 Dundalk Grammar 12 Fr Godfrey Cup Final
Mark Boyle made all the difference as Gorey captured this Junior Cup title for the first time at Donnybrook yesterday.
It took the individual brilliance of Boyle to break the deadlock when the towering centre just took off from inside his own half to bamboozle three defenders in making it to the posts.
Out-half Mark Kehoe added the conversion to open a 7-0 lead but Dundalk immediately sprung into action.
They hit back when flanker Andrew Cox's leg drive propelled him to the line. And then scrum-half Gerald Boylan burrowed over from close range for flanker Daniel Molloy's conversion to make it 12-7 at half-time.
However, the Louth school were not able to add to their total in the second half and this was to prove to be their downfall.
The speed of Flynn Donnelly turned the game in the 48th minute when the left wing made ground with his first touch and flashed to the line from his second.
That levelled the game at 12-12 and Gorey had the backing of the stiff wind which Boyle used to near perfection. And it was his unexpected tap-and-go, allied to fine ball placement in the right corner, that decided the issue.
