Viewers who used the RTÉ Player to watch Ireland's opening World Cup game with Scotland last Sunday have complained to the broadcaster over issues with the streaming quality.

Rugby fans using the service to catch all the action from Ireland's impressive 27-3 victory were left frustrated as their transmission crashed repeatedly.

A spokesperson for RTÉ has told Independent.ie that nearly 130,000 people streamed the World Cup game on the player on Sunday.

The national broadcaster added that a "small number" of users watching Ireland v Scotland battle it out live online have contacted them about their streaming difficulties.

Viewers took to Twitter to complain to the broadcaster, with one writing: "Have missed most of the game so far, constantly crashing."

Another said they downloaded a VPN (virtual private network) that allowed them to access ITV's stream instead.

An RTÉ spokesperson said: "On Sunday a small number of users watching Ireland v Scotland in the Rugby World Cup on RTÉ Player contacted us regarding issues they experienced which affected their ability to stream.

"With any live event of this scale served over IP across 1000s of different devices, there are inevitably going to be some variances in user streaming quality."
