Blackrock College's search for a third consecutive Senior Cup was dashed by Cistercian College Roscrea in the most dramatic fashion in a pulsating quarter-final clash at Donnybrook.

The holders had led for the majority but Roscrea's relentless pressure eventually told in the closing minutes when Dylan Murphy's try broke 'Rock hearts.

After falling behind early on, Blackrock eased their way into the game and went into the break leading 14-5 but such was Roscrea's quality, one always felt that the game was far from over.

Roscrea came out flying as they attempted to batter their way through the blue and white wall and their tactics paid off after five minutes when Matty Keane found his way over the line.

Punished

Tim Foley pulled the conversion which added to an earlier penalty miss as well as another effort that dropped short soon after.

Ten minutes later, 'Rock punished Foley's missed kicks when captain Hugo Kean was on hand to finish off a break by John Fairley. James McGowan made no mistake with the conversion as his side opened up a 7-5 lead.

Blackrock's Roghan McMahon was sent to the sin bin for a tip tackle midway through the half but after he returned, the Dublin school extended their advantage.

Gavin Mullin was threatening throughout and another brilliant break resulted in a second try that McGowan converted.

Roscrea had to withstand an early onslaught in the second half but the momentum would soon swing back in their favour.

Alan Tynan's garryowen was spilled by McGowan and he collected the ball before swatting aside Steven Kilgallen's tackle to score in the corner.

The decibel levels inside Donnybrook increased as Roscrea rallied but the cacophony was still to reach a crescendo.

Camped deep inside the 'Rock 22, Roscrea, just like they had done all afternoon, pummelled their way through and when Kean was sent to the sin bin, they sensed blood.

Their patience was rewarded when Murphy burrowed his way over and Foley's conversion sparked a Roscrea pitch invasion. A stunning finish on what was a memorable day for the school.
