Rob Penney factfile

Playing career: Highly rated No 8 and former captain of Canterbury who played 101 times for the province between 1985 and 1994, Penney was an All Blacks triallist but never earned a New Zealand cap.

Coaching/management career: Marlborough Rugby Union chief executive 1996-99; Canterbury Provincial Development (Academy) manager 1999-2004; Crusaders assistant coach (forwards) winning Super 12 title in 2005, Canterbury head coach 2006-2012, winning four ITM Cup titles between 2008 and 2011;

New Zealand U-20 coach 2012; will join Munster after next month's U-20 World Cup.

Note: Canterbury is a feeder provincial union for Super Rugby franchise Crusaders; they compete in the ITM Cup for New Zealand provinces. Prior to the introduction of Super Rugby in 1996, Canterbury were the major rugby side from the region. Other feeder provinces for the Crusaders include Buller, Mid-Canterbury, South Canterbury, Tasman and West Coast.
