Pat's book semi-final spot
St Patrick's Navan hit 15 unanswered points to knock St Gerard's out of the Leinster Schools (Section B) Fr Godfrey Junior Cup 20-13 in a quarter-final tie at Ashbourne RFC yesterday.
The Navan boys preferred to use their physical superiority, clamping down on the St Gerard's backs, while openside Stephen Keelan and centre Gareth McGrane gave them the tries to mount a charge.
A Jack Keating try and a common-sense use of the wind enabled Pres Bray to breeze past St Andrew's 22-12 at Dr Hickey Park.
Openside Louis O'Flynn-Martin, No 8 Cormac O'Donoghue and wing Daire Henderson also pierced the Booterstown school's defence, with tries from centre Stephen Keenan and full-back Matthew Hennessy replying for St Andrew's.
High School benefited from blindside John Hackett's two touchdowns, the second seven minutes from the end, to edge past Skerries Community College by the minimum margin, 13-12, at the ALSAA Grounds.
In what was a forward-oriented battle not for the feint-hearted, HS prop Richard Beverland and No 8 Darragh Kiernan did most to put their side on the front foot. Dean Kilroy kicked their penalty.
Skerries were living off scraps from their forwards, looking to use their quick players in full-back Paul O'Connor and right wing Shane Hickey -- their try-scorers -- against the run of play.
