At Christmas Andrew Trimble was "sixth or seventh in the pecking order" for an Ireland winger's shirt, but last night was rewarded for his wonderful season with the Hibernia College IRUPA Players' Player of the Year award.

"There's nobody I want to impress more than the people I play with," he said.

"I don't think I was ever in such a position that I had to massively turn things around in terms of what I had been doing before.

"Maybe before I shied away on the big occasions a little. This time, things were building nicely and there's no better place to put in a performance than in the Six Nations. It was about taking my chances and making an impact.

"I was sixth or seventh in the pecking order at Christmas. But if you produce a couple of big performances, maybe there's an injury, the chance presents itself. But it's up to you to take it. I'm not a player who would ever whinge about not being given chances."
