Paul O'Connell would be "an invaluable addition" to star-studded back-to-back European champions Toulon, according to Drew Mitchell.

As Bakkies Botha and Ali Williams prepare to retire at the end of the season, Toulon are understood to have lined up an audacious bid to buy out the last year of the 35-year-old Irish captain's IRFU contract and secure his services for the next two seasons.

"Having someone again with such experience and respect. . . his knowledge and the presence he would have for our younger players he would be an invaluable addition to our squad," said Australian international Mitchell.

"If it does eventually happen and he turns up in pre-season, I'm sure our squad would benefit from his presence in our group."
