Tony Ward: Roscrea dramatically knock the 'Rock to exact Senior Cup revenge
In 2013 at the penultimate stage they blew it and boy did it hurt. 20-9 ahead with Blackrock reduced to 14 they let the consummate cup specialists back in. A nod was as good as a wink and Roscrea paid the ultimate price.
Two years on and revenge never tasted sweeter for the boys from Offaly/Tipperary border. Not alone did they win 17-14 at the death but the manner of the victory at Donnybrook afternoon could hardly have been any more dramatic.
The organisation, the cohesion, the pure bloody minded determination of this outstanding Roscrea eight led by Dan Trayers and Matty Keane (two of four survivors from 2013) eventually saw them home.
Make no mistake this is a squad well equipped to create history and take the trophy back to Roscrea for the very first time. From Keith Kavanagh through Alan Tynan, skipper Tim Foley to full back Tim Carroll is an equally talented backline.
To turn a nine point deficit into a three point win in the last play of the game makes for a team of substance. As I wrote in my pre tournament Irish Independent School guide to Leinster “Along with Newbridge and outside of the big three (‘Michael’s, ‘Rock and Clongowes) this is the best of the rest and a group well capable of going the whole way”.
Now you better believe it.
