David Hawkshaw's piece of brilliant skill lit up this first-round clash at Donnybrook. The inside-centre was a class apart from those around him throughout the game and after he created Belvo's second try midway through the first half, Gerard's challenge was dead and buried.

The Bray school started with plenty of purpose but soon ran out of steam as Belvo looked to spread the ball wide at every given opportunity.

Belvo, who are coached by Clontarf supremo Andy Wood, took a while to settle into the game but as soon as they did, they gained the upper hand.

Full-back David Lacey, who would go on to kick 10 points was the chief orchestrator in their opening try.

He took a brilliant line off Hawkshaw's pass before stepping inside his opposite number and offloading the ball for the onrushing John Meagher, who was never going to be stopped from such close range. Lacey added the extras and did so again ten minutes later when Harry Beggy profited from Hawkshaw's outrageous bit of skill.

The centre collected the ball inside his own half, skipped his way past two defenders and handed off a would-be tackler before playing a sumptuous offload over another defender's head to allow Beggy the easiest of tasks to dot down.

Lacey's conversion gave Belvo a 14-0 half-time lead and by that stage, Gerard's heads had already dropped. The second half failed to live up to the excitement of the first.

Gerard's had a chance to get themselves on the scoreboard but Pierce Redmond's long-range kick dropped well short of the posts. Lacey had no such trouble shortly after when he fired over a well-struck penalty and added another six minutes from the end to ensure Belvo's safe passage to the second round.
