Favourites Ardscoil Ris were pushed close by Glenstal Abbey in this Munster Schools Senior Cup clash, but in the end proved too strong in the Limerick derby at Rosbrien.

Two tries either side of the break were decisive as Ardscoil saw off a late rally from the county school.

It was Glenstal who started the brighter as they opened up a 6-0 lead after 20 minutes through two Jack Stafford penalties.

But seven minutes before the break, Ardscoil showed the first signs of their power when they won a five-metre scrum against the head and Kelvin Brown surged over the line for the game's opening try.

David O'Mahony was on hand to slot the extras before he added a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give his side a 10-6 lead at the break.

It didn't take Ardscoil long to increase their advantage in the second half. Liam Brock won O'Mahony's restart and several phases later, the ball was spun wide for Stephen Fitzgerald to crash over in the corner.

And O'Mahony's brilliant touchline conversion made it 17-6.

Just as the game looked beyond Glenstal, they hit back with a try of their own. Fitzgerald's kick was blocked down and hooker Matthew Ryan was on hand to force his way under the posts. Stafford had the easiest of tasks to add the extras and he duly obliged.

Glenstal piled on the pressure, but Ardscoil never looked in any real danger as they claimed a 17-13 win and a home quarter-final.
