MUNSTER will reassess the extent of Paul O'Connell's ankle injury next week before setting a date for his return.

Amid speculation that the lock's season could be over, the province would only confirm that he suffered ligament damage during Saturday night's Magners League win over Leinster, after he underwent further examination in Dublin's Sports Injury Clinic.

It means that Munster coach Tony McGahan is without his talisman for the trip to France for Saturday's Challenge Cup quarter-final against Brive.

Mick O'Driscoll is the most likely deputy.

Meanwhile, Leicester will be without Marcos Ayerza for Saturday's Heineken Cup clash with Leinster at Lansdowne Road.

The Argentinian prop picked up a two-week ban for fighting with Harlequins' Joe Marler during an English Premiership game at the weekend, which the Tigers won 17-13.
