O'Connell launches ref recruiting drive
Paul O'Connell was recently on hand to launch the new Munster Association of Referees (MAR) recruitment campaign at the Sports Arena in University of Limerick.
At the launch, the Ireland captain reflected on how referees have influenced him over his career, from age-grade right through to professional rugby, and said that they were both mentors and coaches as he moved through the underage ranks.
He stated that referees are his "go-to guys" for interpretation on the technical aspects of the game and recognised the challenges of their role.
He concluded that Munster and Irish rugby need referees on board in order to survive and he strongly encouraged those interested to take up the role and give something back to the game.
This season MAR have designed a new website created to help referees to reach their full potential as they set out to encourage men and women to take up the whistle.
The new website is now more inter-active with plenty of resources and in particular some novelty quizzes to help keep the mind sharp with law issues on the game. It is expected to hold online competitions for supporters in the future.
MAR members will also have access to discussion forums on aspects of law and will be able to deliberate and review decisions made in recent matches.
