Champions Rockwell won't rest on their laurels
This week Rockwell College set out to defend their Munster Schools Senior Cup title in the 106th year of the competition.
The Tipperary school bid for their 27th title since the competition began and captain Diarmuid Barron said the side will not focus on the reigning champions tag as they bid for a two in a row.
"We've nothing to our name yet as a team so we're happy to leave the title of reigning champions behinds us," said Barron. "That doesn't mean much to us for now as we've won nothing yet as a squad ourselves."
"It's a very balanced competition. Every year it's very competitive and I don't think there's any one team that you could pick out to be favourites - everyone has a chance of winning it."
As part of last year's winning squad Barron attributed their success to the hard work and commitment throughout the campaign and said the dedication from the current squad is no different.
"From last year we learned that it all comes down to how hard you work when it comes to winning a cup," he explained.
"We started our cup preparations the second week of September and have played six friendly matches since.
"We've worked really hard in training, three to four time a week with gym sessions twice a week in the morning before school, so we're confident we have put in the preparations needed.
"Especially in the last couple of months we've really come together as a squad and we're very excited to get out there and compete - hopefully all our hard work will show on the pitch."
Living in New Inn, Cashel, Bannon said Rockwell College always has a great following of local supporters and their voices give the team a huge boost on match-day.
"Whenever cup time comes the place really lights up and it's something to look forward to every year," he said.
"Every cup we have massive turnouts to matches which is a great lift - when they get behind you there's no better feeling.
"We really excited about this year's competition and hopefully our hard work will pay off and we'll bring the cup back to Rockwell."
