McCaw lashes out at French gougers
NEW ZEALAND World Cup-winning captain Richie McCaw has spoken out for the first time about the gouging he received in the World Cup final against France and says he was surprised no French player was subsequently cited.
"The French are worse when they are scared," declared McCaw (right). "They were as bad as they have been and were going for the eyes.
"My eye was a bit sore for a while and I was struggling to see for a bit. I was surprised they didn't cite him."
Video footage showed Aurelien Rougerie had a case to answer in the final, but no action could be taken because the new evidence came outside the permitted 36 hours after the match.
The IRB will now look at extending the citing window after reviewing the footage.
