Gorey land South East League title to cap fine season
Arklow RFC was the venue for the South East League final between Gorey and Wicklow last Saturday.
A good crowd was present, with Gorey supporters hoping for a good end to a great season for the U-13s, and those from Wicklow seeking a reason for further celebrations, following their historic Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup success.
Gorey had the upper hand in the first half and were rewarded when George Hadden managed to stretch out and touch the ball down just over the line.
A short while later, Lee Cushe set up his brother Brian to crash over. Lee kicked the conversion to make it 12 - 0.
The lads were warned at half time that the match was far from over and that proved to be the case. For the next 15 minutes Wicklow were camped in the Gorey half as their pack got more in to it. They scored a try, which wasn't converted, and looked odds on to get the next score only for some superb last-ditch tackling.
Eventually Gorey managed to get out of their half to exert some pressure of their own. A penalty was awarded and was sent over by Shamey O'Hagan, bringing the score to 15 - 5 which allowed the lads to relax a little and see out the game as winners.
The SEL Cup brought an end to a brilliant first season at Youths Level for this squad.
A huge thanks from the coaches to all the players, for their commitment over a long tough last nine months, their parents for the support and help they have provided and to Brian Willoughby our Youths Co-ordinator.
