Kick-off clash harming clubs

How often in recent times have we heard the IRFU claim 'this is the year of the club'? All rhetoric and little substance, of course.

Regularly we see professional games -- Heineken Cup and Magners League -- kicking off at the same time as All-Ireland League fixtures the length and breadth of the land.

Well today it goes a step further still, with a full programme of AIL fixtures -- and most kicking off at 2.30 -- precisely the same time as the Ireland v Samoa international.

I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies, given that kick-off times have been put back at Anglesea Road (Old Belvedere v Shannon) and Templeville Road (St Mary's v Garryowen) to 4.30 and 6.0 respectively.

Same country, same game, different planets!
