Ireland will be able to call on the services of Keith Earls at next year's World Cup after the Munster winger extended his IRFU contract.

The Limerick native is the country's second-highest try scorer and was a regular in Andy Farrell's side before injury ruled him out of this year's Six Nations campaign.

He's come back with a series of strong performances for his province and, after penning a one-year deal last season, has opted to continue until the conclusion of the tournament in France next year.

Earls is one of the most popular player in Ireland and the fans' favourite will hope to make a fourth World Cup next season while also targeting a medal with Munster as they go in search of an elusive title.

"Keith is an integral part of the leadership group in the national set up and his experience and game understanding continues to produce quality performances and he is also playing a strong role in guiding less experienced players and developing their understanding of what it takes to compete at the international level," IRFU performance director David Nucifora said.

The expiration date suggests that this will be Earls' final involvement with the national team and the 34-year-old is determined to finish on a high.

"(I'm really happy to extend my contract with Irish Rugby and Munster until the end of the Rugby World Cup in France," he told the IRFU.

"This Ireland squad haven’t shied away from stating their ambition for the World Cup and I want to continue to be a part of that journey.

"Munster’s squad is developing quality depth with lots of talent coming through the Academy and province’s clubs and schools and the new coaching group will be looking to drive the province on again to the next level."
