Kanturk rise a tribute to depth of club game
And what of the equally remarkable achievement by the rugby men of Kanturk?
Having suffered the heartbreak of losing out to Wanderers (30-29) in the round-robin play-off for a place in the All-Ireland League the previous week, the Duhallow men travelled to Shaw's Bridge to take on one of the original top 10 clubs in the country (Instonians) in a winner-take-all clash for a place in Division 2B for next season.
Well not only did they regroup but tries by brothers Luke and Dan McCabe, as well as a history-making sealer from Brian O'Neill, allied to Mark Healy's unnerving accuracy off the kicking tee, made for a 24-13 win and with it a place in All-Ireland League rugby as Instonians' unbroken 23-year run was brought to an end.
It made for a great weekend all round, with club rugby for once getting the opportunity to display its wares. How sad that so many of those who got to where they are in the modern game have long lost sight of what it was that took them there in the first place.
