IRFU target Rio 2016 with Sevens initiative

THE IRFU are putting a domestic structure in place for Sevens rugby with an eye to maximising Ireland's chances at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, writes HUGH FARRELLY.

The union explained yesterday how a Sevens rugby review group has been in place for the last 10 months and, while no decision has yet been taken on elite-level participation, the abridged version of the sport will form part of the domestic game this season.

This will entail provincial competitions for men and women, as well as underage tournaments for boys and girls at U-14, U-17 and for non-exam year students, as the IRFU wish to increase the chances of players coming through for Rio.
