THE IRFU have confirmed that they have approached Leinster coach Joe Schmidt about the vacant Irish coaching role.

Schmidt has been a leading candidate for the position since the IRFU confirmed that they were not renewing Declan Kidney's contract after a disappointing Six Nations campaign.

Schmidt will be one of a number of candidates who will be interviewed for the role and no deadline has been placed on finding Kidney's successor.

Schmidt has won a lot of admirers for the brand of rugby he has instilled at Leinster leading them to two Heineken Cup successes.
