Ireland rise to seventh in IRB world rankings

IRELAND have moved up to 7th in the IRB world rankings but face a tough battle to stay in the top eight to ensure a place in the second tier of the Rugby World Cup draw.

Thrashing Fiji at the weekend had no effect on Ireland’s ranking because it was a non-cap event but Wales’ loss to Samoa saw them slump below us to eighth.

Ireland must beat Argentina on Saturday to stake a claim in the top eight, which would mean Declan Kidney’s men would avoid meeting two big guns in the group stage of the World Cup.

The decision on the pool allocation will be made on December 3 based on the world rankings.
