'We’ve been overwhelmed by the support' - Tom Youngs' wife 'in remission' a year after terminal cancer diagnosis
England rugby player Tom Youngs has thanked fans for their support as he announced his wife was now 'in remission' after a four-year battle with cancer.
This time last year it was announced that Youngs' wife Tiffany had been given a terminal diagnosis with the illness, prompting Tom's brother Ben to pull out of the Lions tour of New Zealand.
The Leicester and England hooker said in a statement today however, that his wife was now in remission, and that the outlook was far more positive than it was a year ago.
"It’s unbelievably good news compared with where we were this time last year," he said.
"We would like to thank everyone for their support during the last year. It has been absolutely phenomenal.
"It has definitely been a great support knowing so many people have been there for us."
Tiffany Youngs also wrote to thank fans for their outpouring of support since the terminal diagnosis was announced last May.
"We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and the kind gestures from everywhere," she said.
"Our families and close friends have been at the centre of that, but also the messages and support from all around rugby have been huge – and not just from when we first told everyone last year, it has gone on all the time. Everyone has been so kind.
"To now be in remission is brilliant news and now we’re just looking forward again."
It was also confirmed that brother Ben would travel with England on their tour of South Africa in light of the news.
"We wish him and all of the England squad all the very best in a big series in South Africa next month," Tom said.
