Tadgh McElroy will not play for the Ireland U-20s at the Junior World Cup which begins in Georgia next week, amidst fears that he may switch allegiances to England.

The Irish Independent understands that Connacht have offered the hooker a contract but he is instead holding out for a move to England, with Saracens amongst the clubs interested in signing the Dundalk native.

McElroy impressed throughout the Six Nations campaign and was initially named in the squad for the World Cup but the management made the decision not to bring him when they flew out yesterday.

The union are keen to promote the development of players who are committed to Ireland and given that McElroy could not give them that, he has been left at home.

McElroy has represented Ireland throughout age-grade level and is eligible to play for England. He is believed to have had his head turned by that possibility.

Several clubs are interested in signing the youngster but he is keen on making the move to Saracens.
