The Ireland U-20s are continuing to count the cost of Saturday's World Cup defeat to England, which has left Noel McNamara's side needing a convincing bonus-point win against Italy tomorrow to advance to the semi-final.

Ryan Baird is awaiting his fate from yesterday's disciplinary hearing following his red card last weekend, while Ronan Watters is following the return to play protocols after suffering a head injury.

A full squad update is due today when the team to face Italy will be announced.

Despite an encouraging performance against a good Australia team, Ireland were unable to live with them, having played the majority of the game a man short.

McNamara was, however, quick not to blame the defeat on Baird's dismissal.

"There are some frustrations that the game ran away from us and we didn't get anything out of it," the head coach insisted.

"It is never one aspect of the game, it's never one incident. There are things that we will look at - could we have navigated our way through the game a little bit better?"
