Fomer England assistant coach Andy Farrell will become Ireland's new defence coach this summer.

The announcement of his appointment was made by the IRFU this afternoon and the former Saracens head coach will begin his new role after the Six Nations and in time for Ireland's tour of South Africa this summer, replacing Les Kiss.

Farrell spent four years as assistant to Stuart Lancaster but was axed following England's controversial Rugby World Cup exit at the pool stage following defeats to Wales and Australia.

According to reports, a number of senior players were critical of Farrell's role in the tournament failure and his risk-averse style.

His appointment has prompted a lot of reaction on social media, including from Ireland's record tryscorer Brian O'Driscoll and a very angry George Hook:
