International flair on show at Tens showpiece
Cill Dara RFC recently hosted their second U-13 International Rugby Tens Tournament. The all-day event attracted clubs from France (CA Orsay), Belgium (Kituro Rugby), Munster and Connacht, as well as a healthy mix of Leinster clubs. In all, more than 300 children participated.
As the group stage progressed, a number of clubs impressed the large crowd of spectators present, most especially Ennis, Seapoint, Tuam and, of course, the visiting French kids who displayed the flair most associated with their national team.
As usual, the knock-out phase brought great excitement and tension.
In the Plate, it was Buccaneers, Athy and the Barbarians, a mix of players from all squads, who steadily progressed through the rounds before the latter two reached the Plate final.
In the decider, Barbarians' bravery was not enough to stop Athy picking up the first trophy of the day as the Kildare club became the 2014 Cill Dara Tens Plate winners.
The Cup final between Carlow and Seapoint was another brilliant game and a fitting finale to the day.
No doubt drained by their semi-final exertions, Seapoint came up just short, losing to a last-minute try.
However, to the majority of players and spectators, Carlow were the most impressive team at the tournament and fitting winners of the 2014 Cill Dara Tens Cup.
The success of this second international tournament has ensured that it will become an annual event with interest already from clubs in Italy and England to compete at the 2015 Cill Dara Rugby Tens.
