High-flying 'geese' show sevens appetite exists

Despite the IRFU's best efforts to keep Sevens off the radar in this country – and they're making a fair fist of it – the Wild Geese continue to fly the flag impressively for the abbreviated version at home and abroad.

Over the past year the 'Geese', composed predominantly of AIL players, have taken home the Dubai International title as well as the Kinsale Sevens Premier competition, followed by almost every other domestic tournament up for decision in Ireland over the summer.

By way of the funds won, along with sponsorship, they have raised in the region of €30,000 to send a strong team to Dubai again this year.

It might seem small fry in terms of finance, but provides proof positive that the desire for Sevens exists where it matters most – at grassroots level – and, more to the point, that progress is being made despite zero support from the governing body.
