Flanker John Shine was the hero as Bruff scored two tries in the final quarter to clinch a place in the final of the All-Ireland senior Bateman Cup by dumping out UCD in a dramatic finish at Kilballyowen Park yesterday.
UCD looked probable winners when they led 22-7 after 55 minutes, but were rocked by the Bruff comeback which saw the pack drive over twice for Shine to grab two tries, the second in the 80th minute and Tony Cahill sparked intense excitement by landing the conversion.
Bruff were awarded a penalty try after 14 minutes which Brian Cahill converted.
But a penalty by James Thornton and a try by Andy Cummiskey, which Thornton converted, had UCD in front at the half-time break.
Dave McSharry got a try after 41 minutes, which was converted by Thornton, and Michael Twomey then added another try after 55 minutes to make it 22-7 with only one winner looking likely at that stage.
However, Bruff never gave up their challenge and Shine's two tries as well as a penalty by Tony Cahill helped them secure a stunning comeback victory which left the visitors understandably deflated.
