Hand and Farrell lead way for Pat's

Back-rowers Conor Hand and Conor Farrell were the key to St Patrick's fourth Leinster Schools (Section A) Duff Junior Cup triumph in five years against a brave St Finian's at Maynooth yesterday.

The Mullingar boys had to get off to a fast start with the benefit of the wind at their backs but they couldn't manage this, No 8 Hand surging over for an unconverted try before Finian's centre Ronan Wallace kicked a penalty to leave it 5-3 at the interval.

The weight of possession and the St Pat's pack proved too much after the break as openside Farrell (twice) and Hand forced their way over. Christian Byrne added a conversion.

Midleton College booked their place in the first round of the Avonmore Supermilk Munster Schools Senior Cup with this surprising victory at the Cricket Field in Midleton.

The game was played in treacherous weather with heavy underfoot conditions, and the home side took full advantage as they ran in two first-half converted tries and then held out for a famous victory.

Full-back Ben Mitchell opened the scoring after 16 minutes when he sliced into the line and cut through the Bandon defence to touch down, with skipper Ned Hodson converting.

The second try came just short of the half-hour mark, when after several pick-and-goes by the Midleton pack close to the Bandon line, prop Thomas Turkington crashed over. Hodson again added the extras.

That was to be the end of the scoring and Midleton can now look forward to a first-round home tie against Ardscoil Ris in mid-January.
