One of Connacht's Pro12 final heroes could be going on next month's tour to South Africa after all after Joe Schmidt confirmed that Leinster wing Luke Fitzgerald has been ruled out through injury.

Many fans were left perplexed after none of Connacht's back three - Matt Healy, Niyi Adeolokun and Tiernan O'Halloran - were initially selected, with that confusion compounded after the trio outplayed their Leinster rivals, Fitzgerald and Rob and Dave Kearney - all of whom were chosen - in Saturday's league final.

However, with Fitzgerald set to miss out after injuring his knee in the 20-10 defeat, Schmidt confirmed that Connacht players are in contention for the spot.

The IRFU tweeted that Healy had been added to the squad, but the tweet was later deleted, with Schmidt then saying that a decision will be made this evening.
