Dan Leavy is a doubt for Leinster’s away game at Benetton Treviso in the PRO14 on Saturday.

More importantly, the probability of missing out this weekend will severely damage his chances of making the cut for the Champions Cup back-to-back fixtures against the Exeter Chiefs.

The flanker had already suffered the setback of missing out on playing for Ireland this month because of a minor hamstring strain.

He went through the quick process of rehabilitation only to be hobbled by a similar twinge at training with Leinster last week.

The back-row resources are such that everyone has to be fit and in-form just to make the bench.

Sean O’Brien, Rhys Ruddock, Jack Conan, Josh van der Flier, just back from syndesmosis of the ankle, and Jordi Murphy are all hunting for a start in Europe.

Should Leavy fail to convince coach Leo Cullen of his fitness to practice and play in Italy, it will leave him with a lot of ground to make up to be in the frame for Exeter’s Sandy Park on Sunday week.

The spike of minor injury prevented Leavy from building on the powerful impression he made on Joe Schmidt in the United States and Japan against either one of South Africa, Fiji or Argentina.
