Credit Scotland and Duncan Weir for replicating Ronan O'Gara and Ireland in their get-out-of-jail winning drop-goal at the death in Rome.

But how sad is it to see Scottish players celebrating as if they had just won the World Cup and not just a Wooden Spoon decider? The euphoria at the final whistle in the Stadio Olimpico illustrated forcibly everything about the game in Scotland at this point in time.

All that said, it makes the French visit to Murrayfield next up all the more interesting, given our trek to Paris seven days on.

For all the Scottish woes, given home advantage against a much over-rated French side, we'll not rule out the improbable. Not for the first time, Bannockburn looms large!
