Ferris right to get ref grievances off his chest

TOUCHLINES applauds free speech and believes that Stephen Ferris was utterly justified in launching a broadside at the pesky Kiwi spoilers and lax South African whistler Marius Jonker.

It all makes Paddy O'Brien's much-trumpeted meeting of referees at the beginning of this international window appear to be utterly meaningless, as respect for refereeing interpretations seem to be diminishing, if anything.

The scrum problems have been well highlighted -- albeit sometimes used by teams to shield their own weaknesses -- but the breakdown also remains a contentious area.

Brendan Venter, Saracens' controversial coach, was hit with a big-money fine last month for mouthing off about officiating -- one hopes Ferris doesn't get the same treatment for having the courage to put into the public domain what most supporters already feel.
