Eight months after playing for Munster, this speedster is set to make his MMA debut Newsdesk Newsdesk

It has been quite a journey for Shane Monahan.

During the Rugby World Cup last autumn, he was signed by Munster to cover their international contingent in the backline. Fast-forward eight months and he is on the verge of his MMA debut.

The former Connacht and Gloucester back was at a cross-roads when his contract wasn't extended by the southern province in November, and he opted to try his hand at MMA in a unique way.

Monahan is taking part in a competition called 'Wimp 2 Warrior' which sees people with no MMA experience take part in a 22-week training camp and ultimately, step into the Octagon.

Conor McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, has been training the contestants, and Monahan's debut has been confirmed for 13 August.

It will be interesting to see how the speedster makes the transition from the rugby pitch to the Octagon.
