Doyle puts result beyond the grasp of battling Cistercian
Newbridge College 14 Cistercian, Roscrea 3
Newbridge repeated their league final victory over Roscrea in the opening round at Carlow, but were made to work significantly harder this time around.
The Kildare outfit ended a 17-year famine to claim league honours last December, and were able to take their foot off the gas a long way from the end back then, winning 43-10.
They will need to be more clinical as this competition progresses, but ultimately Newbridge possessed just too much firepower for their committed opponents.
Newbridge got their opening try at the beginning of the second quarter.
Out-half Jimmy O'Brien raced over and Joe D'Arcy added the extras.
Roscrea's riposte was pretty prompt – in the 26th minute referee Barry O'Keeffe penalised Newbridge for a ruck offence, and Tim Foley slotted over confidently from the 10-metre line.
Newbridge were rocked but Conor Doyle burst through six minutes into the second half for a try to put a more accurate reflection of proceedings on the scoreboard, and despite a spirited Cistercian effort, they couldn't get over the line.
