Refereeing in Connacht comes under the auspices of the provincial referees organisation, the Association of Referees Connacht Branch (ARCB).

The ARCB appoints match officials to Connacht Branch fixtures, and is charged with the growth and development of refereeing throughout the province. In recent years the ARCB has gone from strength to strength due mainly to a root and branch review which took place in 2008/09.

The resulting structural changes have seen the association becoming a much more efficient body in doing its business.

Referee development is the main objective of the organisation. The support structures now in place have enabled referees in Connacht to achieve their on-pitch potential.

The ARCB now has six referees on the IRFU national panel, the group from which referees for Ulster Bank League, Guinness Pro12 and European Cups are selected. The IRFU referee development pathway starts within the provinces and continues through the national and European competitions.

Recruitment and retention of referees still remains a huge challenge for the ARCB and the sport in general. However, refereeing is a very rewarding way to participate in rugby and to give something back to the game.

If you are interested in taking up the whistle IRFU Referee Development Officer for Connacht, Peter Fitzgibbon, will be happy to discuss joining up with you. He can be contacted by phone or e-mail, 086-8322987 or peter.fitzgibbon@irfu.ie . The ARCB website is www.arcb.ie .
