Monivea hold firm to land the crown
Monivea 19 Ballinasloe 10 Connacht U-14 Cup final
Monivea came from behind to take glory in a hard-fought decider. Ballinasloe opened the scoring with a try from strong carrying No 8 Mark Mitchell, converted by full-back Matthew Devine.
Monivea roared back into the game with a try for centre Ruairi Collins, who scythed through the middle to score by the posts. Out-half Evan Connolly added the extras.
Monivea went in front with a try from winger Jack Dowling after a flowing move. Ballinasloe hit back with a penalty from Devine to cut the gap to 12-10 at half-time.
After the break, Monivea used the wind advantage to good effect as they pinned Ballinasloe back in their own half. Ballinasloe, though, battled their way into Monivea territory with Mitchell, openside flanker John Claffey and centre Adam Dowd carrying well.
But the Monivea defence refused to buckle and after they worked their way downfield to earn a five-metre scrum, No 8 Eoin Lawless broke right from the base and powered his way over in the corner.
Connolly landed the difficult conversion to give his side a two-score cushion, and Monivea stood firm in front of waves of Ballinasloe attacks.
