Ballina edged a tense encounter at the Sportsground on Sunday to claim victory over Buccaneers in the U-16 - the first of back-to-back deciders between the clubs.

Buccaneers started the brighter, gaining a firm foothold in the Ballina half through aggressive rucking and some clever backline moves.

The Ballina defence stood their ground, however, and with a stiff breeze behind them, hoofed the ball down-field and when the Buccs backline failed to deal with the bounce, Ballina out-half Craig McCormick was on hand to collect and race over the try line for the game's only score.

Buccaneers had plenty of possession and territory in the second half but the Mayo boys put in a heroic defensive effort to keep them out.
