Galwegians hold Buccs at bay to claim Senior Cup glory
Galwegians RFC lifted the Connacht Senior Cup title by beating Buccaneers 27-10 in the final held just before Christmas.
Having won the toss for home advantage Galwegians hosted the game in Crowley Park and despite the wet and windy conditions the game was watched by a sizeable crowd.
Both teams were without a host of first team regulars due to injury and the unavailability of Connacht players.
Galwegians chose to play with the wind at their back in the opening half and used this advantage to put early pressure on the visitors, an early penalty putting them ahead.
Buccaneers responded well scoring the first try of the game midway through the first half but this joy was short-lived as Galwegians answered with two tries of their own to lead 15-5.
Harry Hughes then narrowed the Galwegians lead by touching down for Buccaneers' second try of the game which left the score line at 15-10 at half time.
However, that was as good as it got for Buccaneers as Galwegians added two more tries in the second half, one of which was converted, to leave the final score at 27-10.
Galwegians will have been delighted to exact revenge over their Athlone-based rivals, who lifted the Connacht Senior League title at the beginning of the campaign.
