Galwegians aim to make winning return to top flight
Newly-promoted Galwegians open their Ulster Bank League Division 1A campaign at home to Cork Con at Crowley Park tomorrow (2.30) as top-flight rugby returns to the west.
The hosts will look to build on back-to-back promotions in the league and make the most of home advantage in the first game of the new campaign against the Munster giants.
It is huge step up from second-tier rugby, but last season when Galwegians went from 2A to 1B, they beat Trinity first time out.
What followed was a shock win away to Shannon and a victory over UL Bohemians to lay the foundations for promotion early in the season.
Survival in 1A is the main target this time around, and they will need to make the most of the matches they have at the Glenina venue.
Buccaneers stagnated in mid-table in Division 1B for much of last season and kick off against Shannon at Dubarry Park on Saturday (2.30).
With St Mary's and Dolphin in 1B this season, it will not be any easier to gain promotion but former Connacht prop Brett Wilkinson will add a new dimension as head coach at Buccs.
Corinthians will look to prove a point as they start life back in 2A at home to Queen's University in Corinthian Park. Sligo travel to take on Navan at Balreask Old in 2C.
