Connacht centre Bundee Aki is set to undergo off-season surgery on an ongoing shoulder issue.

The New Zealander sat out for two months earlier this season after undergoing ankle surgery in December, and he's now set to go under the knife again to repair persistent issues with his shoulder.

The 2015/16 PRO 12 Players' Player of the Year made just 14 appearances in the league this season, seven short of last season's mark where he scored six tries in 21 games as Connacht marched to an unexpected maiden PRO 12 title.

Connacht said in a press release on Monday that they expected the 27-year-old to return in time for the start of the 2017/18 season in what will be the first year of Aki's three-year contract extension that will keep him with the province until 2020.

Aki, who qualifies for Ireland later this year, will be the province's highest earner next season on €350,000-400,000 a year.
