Buccaneers made a winning start to Ulster Bank League Division 1B when they defeated Shannon 21-11 in front of the biggest crowd for some time at sunny Dubarry Park on Saturday.

Buccs were worthy victors, a much improved second-half performance against an influential breeze ensuring that the visitors departed empty-handed in this fixture sponsored by the Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth.

Corinthians failed to make home advantage count in their division 2A fixture against Queens University Belfast, losing 30-18.

Sligo, the only Connacht side to play away from home on the opening weekend, also found themselves off the early pace in Division 2C losing to Navan 54-10.
