Former Leinster coach Michael Cheika has been slapped with a six-month suspended ban and a €4,000 fine, including costs, for abusing a cameraman during a Super 15 game.

The disciplinary officials who handed down the judgment declared that Cheika's colourful history – including a €20,000 fine handed down by Leinster bosses for abusing a linesman – were taken into account.

"I do not regard Mr Cheika to be a first-time offender and it would be farcical to disregard other matters over the past nine years," said SANZAR judicial officer Nigel Hampton QC.

Cheika must also send a written apology to the Super Sport camerman after he was found to have told the man to "f**k off" at least twice during a sideline confrontation at Kings Park Stadium in Durban on March 29, when his Waratahs side lost 32-10 against Sharks.

The Heineken Cup-winning coach has 48 hours to decide whether he will appeal the decision.
