'Prop refs' can sort out scrum confusion
THE issue of scrum penalties and general scrum confusion continues to dog the game.
Last weekend's Heineken Cup action showed again how under-pressure props are prepared to drop the scrum deliberately in the hope of getting a penalty from referees, who struggle to interpret what has actually taken place.
One possible, if radical, solution is to employ former props as specialist video referees.
Many top-flight referees have played the game but none of them were props, and having access to expert analysis from former scrummagers would be one way to bring clarity to this contentious area.
