There was good news for Leinster and bad news for Munster yesterday ahead of their vital Heineken Cup clashes in under two weeks’ time, writes Donnchadh Boyle.

It has emerged that Luke Fitzgerald is available for Leinster’s Magners League clash against the Ospreys on Friday, but Munster hooker Jerry Flannery is not expected to play again until at least the end of the month. Flannery will have a scan today to ascertain the full extent of the calf injury he picked up against Ulster, but he is expected to miss the province’s remaining Heineken Cup pool fixtures at the very least.

Fitzgerald returns to the Leinster set-up for the first time since picking up a knee injury during the Autumn International defeat to New Zealand and a decision on his participation will be made when they name their team on Thursday.

Coach Joe Schmidt can also call on a host of other established stars, including Gordon D’Arcy, Cian Healy, Jamie Heaslip and Jonathan Sexton, who missed out on the win over Connacht due to the IRFU’s player welfare programme.
